Band Members Selected to Join the
Philadelphia Archdiocesan Honor Band

Four members of the Holy Child Academy band were invited to join the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Honor Band and one student was invited to join the Archdiocesan Festival Band this month. The Archdiocesan Honor Band will perform on Friday February 8, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at Prendergast High School.

Invited to the 2007-2008 Honor Band are Sixth Graders Mike Milliken, Justin Coyle and Matt Strahan and Eighth Grader Akul Penugonda. Sixth Grader Michael Esposito was invited to join the 2007-2008 Festival Band. The boys represent the well-rounded student at Holy Child Academy: in addition to playing an instrument in the band, each has participated in school sports, the school play and service programs, and demonstrated academic excellence. The boys are Johns Hopkins Scholars, Gold Medalists in the National Spanish Exam, nominees for Young Authors, and Student Council representatives.

“About 250 students from area elementary schools auditioned for the Honor Band,” said Holy Child Academy Band Director Paul Baldino. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids – the music is much more challenging and they get to meet other kids from different schools. The Honor Band has really raised the bar for each individual school’s band program.”

“Getting into the band is hard work, but it’s a lot of fun,” said Akul Penugonda ’08, who also auditioned for the Archdiocesan Jazz Band and was selected as First Chair for Percussion. “I really enjoy the Jazz Band – we play contemporary music that is harder than the traditional pieces.”
